The first evening

Your first orders, screen by screen

The first time is the only hard one. Here is what each step looks like, what you will see afterwards, and what to do if something looks wrong.

In short

Many orders at once: a Zerodha basket

  1. The link opens Zerodha’s own screen. It may ask you to log in, even if you use the Kite app every day, because this is your browser.
  2. You see each order with its quantity. Read them. You can change a quantity, or switch a row to a limit order.
  3. You confirm. Kite takes ten orders at a time, so a longer list goes in more than one basket. Send one, then come back for the next.

If the market is shut, they wait as after-market orders. Zerodha takes these from 4:00 pm to 8:58 am, apart from its maintenance between 1:00 and 5:30 am, and sends them to the exchange at 9:00 am.

One at a time: Groww, Upstox or a bank’s broker

  1. Search for the company. Pick the result marked as a stock. The same search can also list options on that name, and you do not want those.
  2. Tap Buy, and choose Delivery. Not Intraday: an intraday position is closed the same day.
  3. Enter the quantity from your list.
  4. Choose Market or Limit. A market order takes the best price on offer. A limit order fills only at your price or better, so it may wait.
  5. Review, confirm, and tick it off your list.

Fifteen of these take a while the first time: allow about twenty minutes. Upstox’s page on a simple order shows its own screens.

What you will see next

Open or pendingYour order is waiting for a seller at that price. A market order usually fills in moments; a limit order may take longer.
CompleteIt filled. Your broker shows how many shares, and at what price.
RejectedIt did not go through, and the order status gives the reason. On Zerodha some rejected orders never reach the order book, so read the notification.
In your holdingsShares reach your demat by the evening of the next working day. On Kite they show under “T1” until then.
The valueIt starts moving at once, up and down. That is what shares do. It is not the plan going wrong.

Five first-evening worries

The price movedNormal. A market order fills at the next price on offer, which is why it helps to leave a little spare cash. Use a limit order if you would rather wait.
Only some went throughPlace the ones that are left, and tick only what filled. If the money runs short, add funds or lower a quantity.
One was rejectedRead the reason. It is often the cash, or a stock that has hit its price limit for the day. Fix it and place it again, or try the next day.
I pressed twiceLook at your orders. If the second one is still open, cancel it. If both filled, you hold twice as many, and you can sell the extra in your broker.
I typed the wrong quantityWhile it is open or waiting for the morning, cancel it and place it again. Groww’s page shows where. Once it has filled, sell the extra or buy the difference.

Broker details read from Zerodha, Groww and Upstox help pages on 6 November 2026. Screens change, and your broker’s own page is the final word. General information, not advice.
