Glossary
- Model portfolio
- A published list of stocks or ETFs with a weight for each. You hold it in your own demat and place the orders yourself.
- Rebalance
- The monthly re-scoring that produces the next list. Only the names that change need an order.
- Benchmark or index
- The market measure a book is compared with: the Nifty LargeMidcap 250, the Nifty Smallcap 250 or the Nifty 50.
- Backtest
- A simulation of the rules over past years. Useful for what it shows about a method; not a record of real trading.
- Live record
- The model portfolio’s real movement since each published rebalance, from 31 August 2026.
- CAGR
- Compound annual growth rate: the steady yearly return that would turn the starting value into the ending one.
- XIRR
- The yearly return on money that went in and came out on different dates, as a SIP’s does. It weights each rupee by how long it was invested, so two people in the same fund can have different XIRRs.
- Time-weighted return
- The return of a fund or a model portfolio itself, whatever anyone added or took out. A fund’s NAV and the live record here are measured this way; your own XIRR can differ from it.
- Drawdown
- A fall from a previous high, in percent. The deepest one in a period is its maximum drawdown.
- Alpha
- Return above the benchmark’s over the same period. Here it is quoted only for backtests and says so.
- Momentum and trend
- The tendency of stocks that have risen relative to others to keep doing so for a while, and its failure in sharp rebounds.
- Volatility and liquidity
- How much a price swings, and how easily it trades. Both are read from prices and traded volumes.
- Free float
- The shares available to trade, excluding promoter and locked-in holdings. NSE weights its indices by it.
- Equal weight
- Every holding the same size. The stock books are equal-weighted; MultiAsset weights its ETFs by score.
- Short-term capital gains (STCG)
- Tax on gains from shares held for a year or less: 20% on listed equity. Monthly rebalancing makes every gain short-term.
- Long-term capital gains (LTCG)
- Tax on gains from shares and equity funds held for more than a year: 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh in a financial year.
- Exit load
- A charge some funds take when you redeem early, often 1% of the amount inside the first year. It comes out of what you receive.
- Kite basket
- A batch of up to ten orders that Zerodha opens on its own screen, with quantities filled in, for you to confirm.
- After-market order (AMO)
- An order placed after the market closes, queued for the next morning’s open.
- Demat account
- The account your broker keeps your shares in. Every share a MindForge member buys stays in their own.
- DDPI and TPIN
- Two ways your demat approves a sale. A DDPI is a one-time permission you give your broker; without one, you approve each selling day with your depository’s TPIN and an OTP.
- Fund category
- The label every Indian mutual fund carries under the regulator’s 2017 rules: large cap, mid cap, small cap, flexi cap and so on. It fixes where most of the money must sit, so funds in one category often hold many of the same companies. More
